Bed was clean and comfortable, but the shower room and main room was rather grubby, dirty corners in the bath/shower. Main room could do with marks on walls being cleaned or painted. Staff were lovely, helpful and always accommodating. Breakfast was disappointing for the price, no fresh fruit and hot food, seemed to have been there for rather a long time. We lived in Newbury from the 70's to 2015. The Chequers was always the top 5* Hotel in Newbury, Shame to see it's decline! Car parking was good and very close,

I naively booked a room here without ensuring it would be easily accessible for my wife who has breathing difficulties. That was my fault, no complaint. Our allocated room was on 2nd floor, there are no lifts. My wife couldn’t make it to the room. The lady on reception kindly tried to find us an alternative but was unable to do so. We didn’t get to see our allocated room so I can only report on what I saw in the public areas.

Room was very clean. Shower above the bath worked ok but is rather outdated these days. Free parking was why I booked the hotel. Good central location in Newbury.

Plenty of Parking. Wonderful old character building. Wonderful staff extremely helpful and dedicated. Our room was very clean. Wooden framed sash windows could benefit from a freshen up with some paint but other than that a perfect stay & amazing value for money. Breakfast in the morning was very well presented & really flavoursome. Good choice of both Continental & full English. We also found Newbury to be a delightful historic town with plenty to offer. Would definitely stay with the Chequers hotel again!

Definitely not a 4 star more like a 2 star, the room was not cleaned properly, thick dust in places, dirty cups sharp bits sticking out if the bedroom carpets, in need of decorating just a let down overall so not a nice experience. There was good parking and staff were helpful and friendly and a good location

I enjoyed my stay here. Decent sized car park attached to the hotel, free for guests. The hotel is right in the centre of town and there's a great Nepalese restaurant a few doors along plus a good choice of High Street / Town Centre pubs. My room was beside the main road (the old A4 through the centre of Newbury) but I had no disturbance at all on having a lie-in on a Saturday morning, despite the single glazing. Would definitely stay again.
